Deepfake Influencers

Spotting synthetic social media stars and understanding their impact on mental health.

THE THREAT
Nearly 30 percent of the top-performing influencers in 2026 are not human. These are Generative AI models managed by marketing agencies. Because they are digital, they never age, never have 'bad skin days,' and can be placed in impossible locations, creating an unattainable standard of beauty and lifestyle for real teenagers to follow.

HOW TO SPOT THE FAKES
1. The Ear and Hair Test: AI often struggles with the complex textures where hair meets the ear. Look for slight blurring or merging of colors in these areas.
2. Unnatural Symmetry: Human faces are naturally slightly lopsided. AI faces are often mathematically perfect, which is a major red flag.
3. Eye Reflection: Check the reflections in the influencer's eyes. In a real photo, the reflection should match the environment. AI often generates 'generic' light spots.
4. Jewelry Glitches: AI frequently fails to render earrings or necklaces correctly; they may appear to float or sink into the skin.

THE REALITY CHECK
Remind yourself that these characters are products designed to sell things. Comparing your real body to a collection of pixels is like comparing a real sunset to a video game—the game might look 'perfect,' but it is not reality.
