Discord Gating Risks

Protecting your child from hidden channels and bot-driven social engineering.

THE RISK
Discord has moved from a gaming app to a total social ecosystem. While the public servers are moderated, the danger lies in Private Servers and 'Gated Channels' where adult content and predatory behavior are often hidden behind bot-verification systems.

SAFETY CHECKLIST
1. Global DM Lockdown: Go to User Settings > Privacy and Safety. Turn off 'Allow direct messages from server members.' This forces people to send a friend request before they can message you, which filters out 90 percent of random predators.
2. The Token-Stealer Scam: Be extremely wary of any server that asks you to 'Verify your account' by scanning a QR code or clicking an external link. These are designed to steal your 'Discord Token,' allowing a hacker to take over your account without needing your password.
3. Two-Factor Authentication: Ensure 2FA is active using an app like Google Authenticator. In 2026, hijacked Discord accounts are the primary way malware is spread between friends.
4. Voice Channel Safety: Remind your child that even in private voice calls, recording bots can be active. Assume everything said in a voice channel is being recorded.

PARENTAL TIP
Ask your child to show you the servers they spend the most time in. You don't need to read their messages, but look at the names of the servers and the 'Roles' they have been assigned. If you see servers focused on 'Account Trading' or 'Crypto Giveaways,' these are high-risk areas.
